Mnemonics
Greek: mnēmonikós - of, relating to memory
"A device, such as a verse or formula or rhyme, used as an aid in remembering concepts. Named for Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory in Greek mythology, mnemonics are also called memoria technica. The principle is to create in the mind an artificial structure that incorporate unfamiliar ideas or, especially, a series of dissociated ideas by themselves are difficult to remember. Ideally, the structure is designed so that its parts are mutually suggestive."
Mnemonic device
"Poison IVy "
Explanation
Hypersensitivity: type IV example
Poison IVy causes type IV hypersensitivity.
Mnemonic device
"The "=8" equation: 2x4=8, and 1x8=8."
Explanation
MHC I vs. MHC II: T cell interaction
MHC II goes with CD4.
MHC I goes with CD8.
Mnemonic device
"class I vs. II"
Explanation
MHC: loci creating class I vs. II
Class 1 has 1 letter:
HLA I is HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C.
Class 2 has 2 letters:
HLA II is HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, HLA-DR.
Mnemonic device
"HLA-DR"
Explanation
HLA-DR genetic predisposition immune disease examples:
Hashimoto's disease
Leukemia/ Lupus
Autoimmune adrenalitis/ Anemia (pernicious)
Diabetes insipidous
Rheumatoid arthritis
Mnemonic device
"HISTAMINE"
Explanation
Histamine: features
HCL production
Inflammation
Strong vasodilator
Therapeutic vaue none
Allergy
Mast cells
Neurotransmitter/ Narrow airways
IgE
Mnemonic device
"C3a & C3b"
Explanation
Complement: function of C3a versus C3b
C3a: Activates Acute [inflammation].
C3b: Bonds Bacteria [to macrophages--easier digestion].
If wish to know more than just C3:
C3a, C4a, C5a activate acute.
C3b, C4b bind bacteria.
Mnemonic device
"Combined Complexes and Activators Alone"
Explanation
Complement cascade initiating items: alternative vs. classic
Classic: Combined Complexes. Complexes are made of Ab and Ag combined together.
Alternative: Activators Alone, or IgA. Examples of activators: endotoxin, microbial surface.
Mnemonic device
"N. MeninGitidiS and N. Gonorrhoea"
Explanation
Neisseria MeninGitidiS has M, G and S in spelling - hence ferments all three sugars - Maltose, Glucose and Sucrose, whereas
Neisseria Gonorrhoea has only G - ferments only Glucose.
Mnemonic device
"Graves disease"
Explanation
Graves disease: etiology
In Graves disease, the thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins are of the IgG class.
Mnemonic device
"ABC"
Explanation
Obligate anaerobes: members worth knowing
Actinomyces
Bacteroides
Clostridium
